The Shar Pei Dog

The Shar Pei Dog

The Shar Pei dog has been used for centuries in China

. They helped in herding cattle and guarding homes. They are an interesting breed of dog and many like to own them as pets.

Some believe that the Shar Pei is related to the blue black tongued Chow Chow since it also boasts a blue black tongue and mouth. Apart from the unusual tongue, their wrinkled skin does not only serve as extra skin ready to accommodate the growth of the dog but as a protective coat that enables the dog to wriggle out of their dog opponents during fights. Their coat is prickly and feels like sand making it a rather unique dog.

Its tail is a very important part of its personality. Shar Peis with tails that are not arched are viewed as coward dogs while the ones with the arched tails are viewed as the brave ones.

Apart from its blue black tongue and its abrasive coat, this dog has small triangular ears, a muscular-build and a face like a hippo. The breed comes in different colors, but the most popular among them are the fawn ones. Other colors include red, sand, black, lilac, cream and blue. Their coat can eiher be real rough or slightly prickly. When petting a Shar Pei, you should not go against the direction of his fur because this will only cause irritation on your skin.

You can train a Shar Pei. Owners of this dog should always remember that they are a fighting breed and their fighting instincts are always there. Socialize your Shar Pei to interact with children while they are young so they do not pick a fight with the kids. Shar Pei's when contented and happy, are very playful and mischievous dogs. If they are not trained well, Shar Peis can be very stubborn and strong-willed and like most dogs they are also very territorial.

Shar Peis work well as guard dogs and are generally suspicious of strangers. They are however, very loving animals and are always devoted to their masters. Apart from being extremely devoted dogs, they are also amiable to friends of family members.

If you are going to get a Shar Pei, be sure to check with your local veterinarian to locate reputable breeders.
