Getting A Companion For Your Pet
When we think of bring home a pet or even gifting one to a friend or relative
, the first choice is mostly a dog or a cat. Some times they make very good companions for your pet dog or cat. There are many animal shelters that have smaller animals for adoption. Taking care of a smaller pet is definitely a different ball game all together.Getting a smaller animal home is a good idea for those who are away from home for long hours yet love having pets. It is even better if you get a puppy and a smaller animal together, as they will grow together and bond well. This will save you a lot of trouble in getting the dog used to having another animal around the house and even himself. Even if you are out on tour, the person who volunteered to take care of your dog will only be to happy to take care of your hamster or guinea pig. Smaller animals do not require too much attention and are happy to be on their own.
A small animal is easy to handle and is not demanding too, so you will not find it whining and chewing up your leather shoes or dirtying your sofa. This also means that you do not have to take the trouble to teach the animal to behave itself around the house. If you opt for white mice or a hamster, they both need cages with play things like a rolling drum within, to keep them happy and exercised. So it saves you the extra hassle of taking the animal out for a walk. Since they live in confined spaces, you will only have to clean the cage once a week, though you will have to give it food and water daily.
However there are times when you should avoid keeping small pets at home. Remember, small animals can not bark or meow to grab your attention and if you are forgetful and miss keeping food and water for the animal, it could be disastrous. When the animal is small, it requires to be fed at regular intervals or it will not survive. Another major hindrance in keeping small animals may be your pet dog or cat, which may not appreciate sharing the home space and your affection with them.
Another fact to keep in mind is that small animals do not respond to humans with the same affection as dogs or even cats may show. They can bite or scratch your hand if scared as they have well developed defense instincts. As they live in small places, their surrounding has to be meticulously cleaned every day. The nocturnal activities of some small pets may give you sleepless nights. Kids over enthusiasm may cause the small pet great discomfort.
