Organize Your Finances, Your Kids, & Your Life! Organizational Tips #1-5 For 2010

Weekly Tip #1 for 2010

Categorize Before You Organize: Make sure you separate all items into categories before storing them away. Sometimes the best way to clean up a huge mess is to lay it all out, separate into categories and then store everything away.

Weekly Tip #2 for 2010

Clear Containers are best for using when storing items away. You will know just what is inside with one quick look and are less likely to have to label it. If you do not have clear containers available, try using different colors that you would associate with the items stored inside. Example: Red/Green: Christmas items, Black/Orange: Halloween items. Child's favorite color: child's favorite items.

Weekly Tip #3 for 2010

Keys: Keep all keys in a decorative basket or bowl or hang them up on a key hanger. Label each set of keys with a clip on key tag and/or give each key a different color. You can purchase clip on key tags at most office supply stores. Make sure to have those spares hidden well for those days when you lock yourself out.

Weekly Tip #4 for 2010

Be prepared/Stock Up: Keep all of your commonly used items in stock at all times. This includes food items (food that will not spoil/expire before they are used), toiletries, paper products, office supplies and more. Every time you use the second to last of an item (leaving one item left in storage), make it household policy to then add that item to your shopping list. This way you have plenty of time before you have to purchase that item again and you can once again stock up on it on your next shopping trip, when you find it for a good price.

This will also prevent you from running out of those much needed items at the last minute resulting in an unexpected trip to the store, wasting time, energy, gas and money. Many people unnecessarily spend extra money on items they need, because they cannot wait for a sale or better deal; if you keep your commonly used items in stock you will not be caught in this situation very often.

Weekly Tip #5 for 2010

Get rid of pile: Start a "Get rid of pile" and keep it going. Choose a place in your home that is easily accessible to everyone in the family (this is important) and has plenty of room for storage such as your basement, attic or garage. Store all of your unwanted items in this area and add to this pile regularly. Separate the pile of unwanted items into different categories such as garage sale items, church donation items, items to sell on eBay, clothing drive items, and on and on. Keep all items stored in containers (large plastic containers work best) or empty cardboard boxes (always have an empty one available to add to). This way everything will stay clean and organized for easy access later on. Now every time you come across an item that you no longer want or use, all you have to do is add it to the pile. Have your children do this regularly when they clean their rooms. Give them an empty box to fill and then add it to your "get rid of pile". You will be amazed at how fast this pile grows and how much clutter will be removed from your home.
