Why All Kids Need Creative Toys
With the abundance of computer games and television distractions and toys with little
room for creative engagement for children, it is important to give their lives a little balance by providing them with toys that nurture and develop their creative side.Creativity is not limited to the arts and 'creative activities' such as music and visual arts. Creativity can be developed in many areas of life such a maths and problem solving, social interaction and human movement. Creative toys will stimulate your child to use their brain actively instead of passive play. Creative toys will encourage role-play, problem solving and the use of their imagination.
Creativity is important for many reasons. While researchers may argue how, they will all agree that creative thinking benefits children in the following ways;
Develops flexibility of thinking, original thought.
Heightens perceptiveness, tolerance for uncertainty and willingness to overcome obstacles.
Increases the ability to strive and enables better motivation.
Helps to develop individuality and self awareness and awareness of others.
Wooden toys are becoming more popular again, as parents realise their value in a child's play repertoire. Because wooden toys are generally less interactive and have less movement and detail than plastic or automated toys, they allow more room for a child to use their imagination.
Any parent would have noticed that a child will play almost anything, as long as they have an idea of what to play. Some children are more inclined to use their imaginations than others, but that exactly why they should be encouraged to exercise this part of their brain. Wooden toys don't over take the child's desire to pretend.
Wooden blocks are marvellous of example why wooden toys stimulate creativity. Using simple shapes and colours, a child can create any scenario they choose from towers and castles to patterns or towns.
Other types of creative toys are craft activities. Colouring pencils, texters or crayons, paper, card, paint, glue, sparkles, scissors and glitter are things children love to get creative with. Every child loves to draw a picture on a piece of paper. Once again, their play is limited only by their imagination.
Toys like plasticine or play dough are also great ways for a child to stimulate their creative side. With no limits, they can create people, items scenes or patterns and this type of brain activity has benefits in all areas of their lives. Creative thought encourages lateral thinking and problem solving which are skills extremely valuable to them as they mature.
Musical instruments give children a new way to express themselves and gives them another way of understanding the world. Learning to read music and play an instrument is yet another way to improve creative thinking and expression.
Dress up costumes and props to allow for role playing and pretend are simple, cost effective ways to encourage creative play and therefore creative thinking in your child.
In general it could be said that if you can steer away from children's toys that provide too many stimulants or possess batteries and make many sounds you will be on the right track to finding the most creative toys for your child. Simple, noiseless toys are usually best. Stick to toys that challenge the child to think, to engage and not sit back and become a passive receiver of stimulation.
