Let Children Choose Their Curtains

Let Children Choose Their Curtains

Choosing your own bedroom curtains is often the first creative decision made in childhood

. It may only be a decision between Disney Princess and Sponge Bob Square Pants but it remains a formative way-marker nevertheless. Like all commercial enterprises anxious to capitalise on the ever-expanding spending power of the 'tweenage,' and pre-'tween' market, the textile industry offers an increasingly vast range of choices.

Unsurprisingly, they have tapped into the popularity of children's films and animations and are seeking to cash-in on the profits that the movie-makers have shown to be derived from associated products. For example, it is now possible to purchase curtains featuring popular characters from Toy Story and Shrek. Obviously there is also money to be made from designs featuring football teams, or popular children's TV programs.

It is usually possible to buy a whole host of matching products to go with your character curtains. The advice would be to make some price comparisons online, as there are large disparities in cost for these items. Since children's tastes are liable to change it is advisable not to spend too much money at this point.

Curtain vendors also seem to have realised that children's tastes vacillate and have kept prices competitive. But please don't forget to check whether your drapes come with liners, unlikely in the lowest price bracket, and a nuisance if you don't want your children awake with the early-morning chorus!

For those wishing to make their own curtains, the web, and some larger home furnishing stores, will sell fabric with popular character designs by the metre. This is evidently essential if you have windows that are of a particularly awkward size but otherwise I would tend to save yourself time and money and opt for the ready-made. It is also worth considering whether to steer your child towards a less character specific design. Both online and in-store, shops offer their own range of children's designs, which often feature lovely patterns and eye-catching colours. These would probably have more longevity in terms of your child's developing tastes, although, please remember, it is all about your child making their first creative decision, regardless of your personal reservations in seeing Sponge Bob splashed across their room!
