The Stigma Of Drop Shipping
If you have items drop shipped to your customers
, you most likely feel just a twinge of guilt about the whole deal. After all, it may actually feel as if you're taking advantage of them, by having someone else do all of the work while you receive a fairly large cut of the proceeds. You do not have to store the items, perform the actual shipping, or jump through the hurdles customs tends to throw at a shipper when it goes international (which it tends to, if you buy from countries where production is cheap). This has led to there being something of a stigma surrounding drop shipping, as if the sellers are somehow less trustworthy than if they were storing the entirety of their inventory at their own warehouse.
Simply put, drop shipping is just the act of advertising products on behalf of a manufacturer, so that people will buy the products in question. When someone places an order, you the seller receives a commission, and the manufacturer or distributor handles the logistics of getting the item into the hands of the person who bought it. Overall, it's a pretty simple arrangement. And there is nothing illegal or unethical about helping a manufacturing company to do what they do best (produce any given widgets), while you provide a "local face" and a reassuring voice for your (and their) customers. If not for sellers like yourself, a lot of manufacturers would be very hard up to make sales, which could drive them out of business.
The process of drop shipping began precisely because goods can often be inexpensively produced in far off places. A widget that might cost a penny or two to produce in South Korea or mainland China might cost $10 to produce if it were made the United States. Our workers require more safety protocols (as mandated by federal law), and demand both higher pay and benefits. Also keep in mind the fact that the currencies of many Asian and Latin American countries are worth far less than our dollars. Considering those two facts, it becomes pretty obvious that letting a local person sell the merchandise while someone far away produces and ships it makes a lot of economic sense.
So why would drop shipping have a stigma associated with it? Most people who turn up their noses at drop shipped items don't do so because the items are made by foreigners. They would get the same types of items from precisely the same countries if they went to the nearest big box retailer. And this also has nothing to do with the quality of the merchandise, as no drop shipper with an urge to stay in business would ship inferior merchandise to a paying customer. It would seem that the only reason anyone has any kind of ill will toward drop shippers is that they simply do not understand the innocence of the process. Drop shipping is nothing more than a tool by which goods can be marketed by a local, and sold by a manufacturer who can do so on the cheap.
