What Is A Bol And What Is It Used For In Shipping?

Paperwork is an important part of most types of business

, and the courier industry is no exception. Whenever you're dealing with a New Jersey courier service you're going to likely have to deal with a number of forms and documents, and they will have a fair amount of paperwork that is going to go out with any of your shipments. One of the most common documents in the shipping industry is something which is known as the bill of lading. Most people in the industry will simply refer to this as a BOL.

The bill of lading is a fairly standard document. Certainly, any time you're using a larger trucking company to move freight for you, the shipment will be accompanied by one of these documents. This is the primary piece of paperwork that people working in shipping and receiving departments use to verify that they are receiving what they ordered. They also use them to cross reference against the actual delivery itself to make sure that everything is in order.

The BOL is also very important for international shipping. Whenever something goes across an international border, there is a requirement for a great deal of paperwork to be presented in order for the customs and border agents to allow the shipment to cross. One of those documents that are always required is a bill of lading. Without one, it would be entirely possible for your shipment to actually be held at the border and not allowed across.

The bill of lading basically includes all the important information that anyone would need to know about the shipment. It will show who is shipping the goods, what they are shipping, and where they are coming from and going to. It will also list the applicable dates of interest on the shipment, and how much was paid for the shipping.

The bill of lading is a document that you should become familiar with. Get a hold of one and take a look at it so you know what it looks like, and what kind of information is contained in it. When you start shipping more and more regularly, there is an ever increasing chance that something will go missing on a shipment, so it's always a good idea to be as familiar with all the applicable paperwork as possible. Knowing what a BOL looks like, and what it says, is a very good place to start.
