The Isle of Wight - Tourist Attractions and Where to Stay

The Isle of Wight is the largest island of England, situated off the south coast of Hampshire. The island offers the perfect break for people that love being outdoors on holidays, with wonderful wildlife and scenery.

With 57 miles of coastline, the Isle of Wight boasts some of the finest view points in the world, backed up by the fact that more than half of the island has been designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty.

It is well worth visiting just to see the different wildlife on the island. Unlike mainland UK, no grey squirrels are to be found on the island; instead the red squirrel inhabits much of the island. There are also other examples of rare wildlife, such as wild bats and the dormouse. The Isle of Wight - Tourist Attractions and Where to Stay

Much of the west of the island is rural, with miles upon miles of walking paths and cycling routes. Places such as Freshwater are an ideal base to explore the west of the island. Also in the west are the island's most famous landmark, the dramatic stacks of the Needles. For the best view, head for the picturesque Alum Bay to take spectacular photographs of this amazing chalk attraction. Newport is the main shopping location on the island, whereas further to the east is Ryde, the island's largest town. Ryde has two carnivals per year, and, like many of the east coastal regions, has lovely beaches to discover.

For such a small island, there are lots of things to do, and with the small size of the island, all are reachable within a short drive. It would be impossible to list everything that is worth seeing in such a short piece. However, there are a couple of attractions that are definitely worth viewing. The Isle of Wight Military History Museum is fantastic, set on a former WWII barracks, it has a number of tanks to look around and stages re-enactments with them. Going on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway is also a rare experience in today's times, plus it has the added bonus of letting you see more of the island. To get a flavour of how the Isle of Wight has developed, then the Museum of Island History is a good value enjoyable trip for all, with exhibitions on to display the past. For the adults, visiting the Rosemary Vineyard is good for a different pastime in the UK.

Finally, it would be hard not to mention the Isle of Wight Festival, which is held annually in June. The festival attracts some of the biggest musical acts in the world, and thousands of fans flock to Seaclose Park in Newport from all over the UK and beyond.

Holiday lets in the island are available throughout the year, although they do book up fast in holiday periods. The seaside resorts all are excellent locations to stay, with lots of amenities to be enjoyed close by. However, holiday lets all over the island are ideal because you can still enjoy the life of an islander but be away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist areas if you wish and still not be too far away. There are many types of holiday lets in the Isle of Wight for people with a range of budgets, such as camping, bungalows and cottages.

Overall, The Isle of Wight is a fantastic place in the world which provides an abundance of good value activities for all to enjoy.
