Musings on a trip to Bali
For this item I'd like to talk about Bali holidays, particularly as it's one of those far away destinations that gets dropped in on by British tourists en-route to Australia or New Zealand or as a major tour of South East Asia or even as an extension to a Malay or Thai visit.
I now see it in a different light because several things dawned on me as I travelled around this stunningly beautiful, surprising land. First of all lets dispel a myth yes you will find Aussies in abundance but only in Kuta; accept this resort in a similar way to the Spanish Costas and you will survive and even love this resort for its sheer impudence.
Swiftly moving on (or not depending on how traffic moves away from this centre of tourism) you will begin to discover a landscape that begs to be photographed and an uncomplicated culture just longing to be embraced.
For Bali, tourism is a lifeline and the Balinese take it very seriously, with 80% of the population working in this sector it is no surprise to learn of dedicated Tourism Schools and exceptionally high standards of service in all areas. Visits to hotels demonstrate just how professionally they are run, from garden workers to kitchen staff to catering to management; virtually every face you see will smile and every request met with a certainly'.
Diversity is perhaps a tad overused in travel speak but I cannot find an alternative single word to describe the contrasting coastline which can by soft and white sand, calm warm waters, exciting surfing seas, rocky cliff faces or black volcanic crystals. Or the interior which offers surging waterfalls, ancient temples, even older rainforest, tranquil spas, modern cities, individual shops and the list goes on.
After a long flight book into a coastal hotel in the south which will be a maximum of 45 minutes from the airport at Denpassar, enjoy the spectacular sights en-route then relax with great beaches, views and exquisite food plus superb golf courses. You will find hotels and resorts here a revelation, luxury all villa eco resorts such as Alila Villas Uluwatu and the Banyan Tree on the extreme south coast, calming beachfront accommodation within seconds of bustling high streets in Seminyak such as the Oberoi, the Samaya and lavish modern resorts in the Nusa Dua peninsular
With a few inexpensive massage treatments you will be ready to venture inland maybe as far as Ubud which will take less than an hour to reach. From here you will find mountainous rainforest and more than likely a view from your room resembling and adventure novel cover. Take time to try white water rafting, trekking, volcano climbing and of course yoga meditation.
