Four Places To Reach Buddha During Thailand Holidays

Four Places To Reach Buddha During Thailand Holidays

No visit to Thailand is complete without some Buddhist experiences in Bangkok

. The city may be a pulsating dynamo of power, but has much more to it than tangy cuisines, electrifying nightspots, glitzy shopping, infamous massage parlours, and some of the best hotels in Thailand. Bangkok is full of contradictions. Although, it does have its naughty side, this is the place where the benign pulse of Buddhism also beats hard. It is a common sight to see Buddhist monks go about begging for alms in the morning. Tens of thousands of Britons amongst other travellers fly in to Bangkok year after year to soak in the mystique of Buddhism. Here are some of the most popular Buddhist temples in Bangkok.

Wat Phra Kaew

The Temple of the Emerald Buddha is perhaps Thailands most acclaimed temple and a must visit part of all Thailand holidays. Standing on the Royal Palace grounds and with its association to the king, this temple touches a special chord in the hearts of the locals. The temple has two libraries stocked with pearls of wisdom in the way of priceless Buddhist manuscripts. However, the temples main claim to fame is none other than the highly venerated statue of the Emerald Buddha. The Emerald Buddha symbolises victory and both Cambodia and Laos lay claim upon it. Be absolutely certain to include Wat Phra Kaew in the itinerary while planning holidays to Thailand.

Wat ArunFour Places To Reach Buddha During Thailand Holidays

The Temple of Dawn or Wat Arun is another contender to the title of Bangkoks most famous temple. The gigantic prang of the temple makes for an awesome sight as one approaches it from the Chao Phraya river. The tiles shine dazzlingly in the sunshine. Wat Arun is one of those temples that predates the time before Thailands seat of power moved from Ayutthaya to Bangkok. The city is full of such delightful Buddhist memorabilia that make every cent worthwhile spent on arranging holidays to Thailand.

Wat Traimit

Wat Traimit is the abode of the largest Buddha in the world to be made in solid gold. The Golden Buddha is some 15 feet tall and weighs around eleven thousand pounds. Dating back from the Sukothai era, the Golden Buddha hides an interesting tid bit of history. Long back in time, the Budddha statue was covered under a layer of plaster to hide its value and over time this fact faded from the memories of people. By a twist of fate, a little piece of the plaster got scraped off when the statue was being transported to Wat Traimit. It was then that the world re-awakened to the true identity of the Golden Buddha. Definitely, keep Wat Traimit in mind while planning out Thailand holidays. The temple is conveniently accessible as some of the most popular hotels in Thailand are not too far away from there.

Wat Suthat

The Wat Suthat gives the sense of an excellent fusion between Buddhism and Hinduism. Although, it is a Buddhist temple, every year rituals are carried out by a Brahmin priest and the temple is also the priests home. A large red swing frame of the Chinese variety in the temple premises adds a strange Chinese influence to the temple. The Wat Suthat is the shrine of the 25-foot tall Phra Sri Sakyamuni Buddha. About 150 golden Buddhas line the homes of the monks. Delightful murals seem to bring to life the different reincarnations of the Buddha.
