Many mothers and fathers fear the day their youngsters fly the nest to enter student accommodation.

However, this is a needless worry in many cases, new research has found.

According to a poll commissioned by Unite, 84 per cent of parents reported their lives had improved since their sons and daughters had left the family residence.

Despite initial concerns over so-called 'empty nest syndrome', the majority of couples revealed they had found a new lease of life and felt financially better of as well. Indeed, respondents were better off by an average of around 600 a month.

This may come as welcome news to parents of those preparing to go to university at the end of the summer.

Across the UK at present, thousands of youngsters are searching for and moving into student homes to live in for the beginning of the new academic year.

Meanwhile, it was also found that many of the parents surveyed felt they were fitter and happier since their offspring moved away to begin higher or further education.

They also reported being able to spend more time with their companions and friendship circles were said to increase by a typical number of five.

Some even noted they intend to take up an extreme hobby such as white water rafting after their children had moved into student accommodation.

However, responding to the findings, Jeremy Todd, chief executive of Parentline Plus, said the experience of sons and daughters moving away is not a happy one for all parents.

He remarked: "[They] may be anxious about their child's life skills as they prepare to live away from home for the first time and worry if they will manage their money, be able to make a decent meal and not spend all their time at the student union making the most of cheap alcohol promotions."
