Why It Is Important to Teach Children Acceptance About Differences in Other People

In today's world, our children are exposed to a variety of cultures. In order to ensure that our children are able to thrive in such a diverse environment, we need to teach them to accept differences in others. Not only will they have many more opportunities if they tolerate the cultures of others, their lives will be enriched by the people and traditions of cultures outside of their own.

There are many differences between people that children should be taught to accept. These include differences in: religion, race, socioeconomic standing, ideals, etc. These few categories affect almost every aspect of life, so it is important that children are taught to tolerate these differences, rather than discriminate against or shy away from them.

Children who are taught to accept the differences in other people will be more likely to experience more in their lifetime. They won't be afraid to explore other cultures or befriend unfamiliar people. This acceptance will touch every part of their lives. Their relationships will be enriched, as they will be open to learning about the traditions of others. These children will benefit from everyone they experience, not just those who share their worldviews. They will learn more about the world and how to benefit it, as well as how it can benefit them. Even business relations will be easier to make and sustain by people who have been raised to understand and accept differences in others.

In addition to providing our children with a well-rounded life and as many opportunities as possible, teaching them to accept the differences in others will allow them to benefit others. By extending their education to include cultures other than their own, our children will be able to touch many more lives.

Children are not naturally prejudiced, that is something they learn. Be it a lesson from parents, relatives, friends, or culture, this is a lesson that should be avoided. Instead of teaching hate and discrimination, let's teach our children to value themselves, and others, not for what they look like, but for who they are. The lesson of tolerance is one that will last our children a lifetime.
