Learn Ninjutsu - Why Are There So Many Kamae In The Ninja's Self Defense Arts?
One of the most common questions that new students trying to learn ninjutsu - the
art of Japan's ancient Ninja warriors - is related to why there are so many kamae, stances or postures, in the Ninja's self defense system.And, while most teachers and students see the kamae as "necessary evils" that you must learn to get to the "cool stuff." The master understands the deep-level secrets contained within the kamae which makes them more than simply "positions of safety."
And, once you read this article, you'll understand better why the Ninja's kamae really ARE the "cool stuff!"
The basic idea behind the kamae is that there are certain things that must be controlled within a given fight. These "things" include guarding against his attacks, protecting your own targets from being hit or grabbed, etc.
There are also common emotional states and strategies for applying techniques. Simply put, different attackers and attack-situations make us think and feel differently. Also, because of our job, environment, or intentions, the results that we want are going to be different from every other situation.
So, based on what a specific ryu-ha, lineage or martial school focused on in these areas, they would have created specific kamae, or ways to position the body and its parts, that allowed them to strategically and scientifically control a fight situation.
If you'll notice, all of the kamae, regardless of the lineage, have the arms in different positions relative to the way the body is aligned. All of these positions control several things. They control:
1) The attacker's ability to get at you
2) What strikes, kicks, and techniques are most natural and therefore "easiest" from that position, and...
3) The attacker's perceptions and choices from within the moment-to-moment interplay of the situation.
While the kamae are typically taught very early on in the training, they are by no means "beginner lessons." They ARE basics, but only in the sense that they are critical and important elements in your overall mastery.
The Ninja's kamae are both signs to the deeper level lessons and strategies of a given ryu-ha, and they are a means of scientifically controlling a fight situation to make it as difficult as possible for your opponent, while making it as easy as possible for you to win!
What you focus on really depends on whether you just want to learn some cool techniques, or whether you want to "embody" and become the same kind of warrior as those who originally passed down these powerful lessons in the first place.
