Chantix is Associated with a Number of Severe Side Effects:
Chantix is a prescription drug used as an aid to people who want to quit smoking. It is generally accepted that stop smoking therapies are more likely to succeed for people who are ready to stop smoking and who are provided with some type of support. Support includes educational materials and one on one counseling. It helps to talk to someone when smoking urges arise as you experience some withdrawal symptoms. A date should be established that you will stop smoking and that is usually one week before you begin your Chantix therapy. The recommended dose of Chantix starts out at 0.5mg a day for the first 3 days and is increased to 0.5mg twice a day for the next 4 days and on the eighth day is increased to 1mg two times a day. You will continue with this dose for eleven weeks. If you are successful with your first round of therapy, it is suggested that a second 12-week therapy be administered to increase you chances for long-term success. If success has not been achieved the first time around, further counseling should be administered to identify why Chantix was not successful. Then a second round of treatment may resume. Care should be taken with patients who have severe kidney dysfunction as their dosages will have to be decreased accordingly. Care should be taken with patients who are known to have hypersensitivities or skin reactions to Chantix. There have been reports of serious skin complications such as Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) while on Chantix. SJS is skin problem that can be life-threatening that causes death of the outer layer of your skin cells known as the epidermis, which then separates from your dermis. Although SJS can be caused by allergies, viral infections and over the counter drugs, it is commonly caused by medications. If you experience a skin rash with oozing lesions, you will need to contact your doctor as soon as possible as this may be life threatening. Other Chantix side effects have been noted, including neuropsychiatric symptoms such as depression, aggressive behaviors, suicidal thoughts and suicide. A number of state and federal Chantix Lawsuits have been filed.
FDA has Required Numerous Label Changes on Chantix Packages:
The first Chantix alert came out in November 2007. At that time, the FDA required that the manufacturer of Chantix add a new boxed warning and develop a patient medication guide warning about the serious neuropsychiatric symptoms that may occur in patients using Chantix. The FDA also advised doctors to tell their patients to stop taking Chantix if they experienced mood swings or other changes in behavior that are not normal for them. Further consumer complaints about neuropsychiatric effects spurred the FDA to require a Black Box warning on Chantix packages to make sure that consumers are aware of the severe psychological side effects in July 1, 2009. In addition to this warning, the FDA required the manufacturers to conduct further clinical trials to provide more data about these neuropsychiatric complications. The addition of a Black Box warning to Chantix, may be an indication of a Chantix Recall in the near future.
