If You Don't Discipline Your Child Now, You'll Regret it Later

If You Don't Discipline Your Child Now, You'll Regret it Later

It almost never works as the child continues to disobey and scream until it either gets what it wants or the parents lose their temper. Children need discipline at a young age and parents are the people in charge of teaching children these social skills.

Remember you are the parent, not their friend. Do not reason with your child. It's important you always understand this firm and unchangeable relationship. I'm not saying you cannot be friends and get along with your children, but understand the relationship you have with your child. It is created very early on in their development and in yours, as a parent. You must understand that is your duty to ensure you raise an individual who is capable of being a proper citizen of the world.

When it comes to your child you must be consistent in your discipline right from day one. You must be firm and serious, and not break your own rules because you've been manipulated by their tears. They learn as an infant that crying will give them what they want or need. Like being fed of changed. As they get older children turn on the floodgates as their means of being able to get what they want and avoid punishment for whatever they're being disciplined for.

Once they learn how to speak, this should not be encouraged. You don't need to scream or yell. And definitely do not swear. Practice your 'look'. You should want your child to know when you are serious so they don't horse around when you want them to listen. You'd be surprised how well a good glance works.

When you scream or yell, and hit them, you're showing them that you're not in control of yourself; that you're not able to deal with the situation. As they grow the yelling and the hitting won't hurt physically them anymore. Then you'll have a real problem. What a child needs is consistency. Calm in demeanor and being decisive with your punishment while never giving in, even when the puppy eyes cast their long gaze upon you. Even worse, you're teaching your child how to improperly cope with situations by your example.

With proper restraint and consistent behavior, you will establish a relationship that can be effective with discipline without losing control or being controlled. Children need discipline. They also need consistency. They are learning from you. If you aren't in control of yourself how can you expect your child to? You are also serving a great lesson. That because of your stability, when real trouble ensues they will more likely come to you and be honest rather than try and hide the truth from you for fear of reprisal.
