A Trip to the Theatre Creates an Engaging Experience for Children

When people think of the theatre, rarely do the words "family friendly" pop into their minds. However, London theatres create an exceptionally memorable experience for kids. When bringing their children to the theatre, parents are often amazed at how engaged and involved their children become with the experience. A trip to the theatre can be a life altering experience for a child, and can instil a lifelong love of theatre and culture.

The theatre is host to a wide range of shows, and there are no shortages of productions that will interest children of any age. In order to ensure a successful visit, there are several things that can be done to prepare children for the experience.

First and foremost, it is important to explain to a child how the theatre is different from a movie. To help garner respect and awe for the talent that goes into the production, be sure to explain that all singing or acting is done live- none of it is taped and there are no cuts and retakes in live theatre- the actors are expected to get every line correct through the entire performance. When attending a production with an orchestra, take time before the show begins or during intermission to point out the musicians to the child. This will help them understand all the pieces that fit together to create the grand presentation they are viewing.

Also, take time to explain to the child the logistics of viewing a production at a theatre. Let the child know that they will be expected to stay seated during the show, and that they will have an opportunity to move around during intermission. If viewing a production more suited for an older crowd, ensure the child knows they will be expected to remain quiet during the majority of the production, so they do not disturb other theatre goers. Overall, staying seated and quiet usually is not difficult during a trip to the theatre, most children will become enthralled with the action on the stage, and will have no problem staying engaged with what they are viewing.

If taking a younger child to the theatre, try to stick with productions geared more towards their age range. There are many productions based upon children's stories and characters that are friendlier to the younger crowd, and younger children can enjoy these productions without the worry of staying seated and acting proper for long periods of time.

In this modern world, it has become even more important to instil a sense of culture into children in order to ensure they become a well-rounded individual. London theatres provide an excellent way to foster a lifelong love of theatre and culture in children.
