In 1970, sociologist Dr. Edward Banfield of Harvard University wrote a book titled "The Unheavenly City". This book goes into detail about one of the most (if not "the most") important discoveries about what determines how successful a person is (or is not).
The goal of Dr. Banfield's study was to find out how and why some people became financially independent during the course of their working lifetimes.
It's interesting to note that the doctor started the study convinced that the "answer" would be found in factors such as family background, education, intelligence, influential contacts, or some other concrete factor. His goal was to prove what he actually already believed.
The results shocked everyone, including himself . . . the major reason for success in life was a particular attitude of mind.
Banfield dubbed this term attitude - "long-time perspective" - and defined it by explaining that those who were benefiting from the most success in life and also the most likely to continue to move up economically were the men and women who took the future into consideration with every decision they made in the present.
He found that the longer the period of time a person took into consideration (the further he or she was able to look into the future), the more likely it was that he or she would be successful in his or her career.

But then, these people are regarded as among the most respected and successful professionals in the US. Why? They all have "long-time perspectives" which are crucial to success.

Banfield explains that you can evaluate how important something is today by measuring its potential future impact on your life and then making the right sacrifices.
If you decide to spend time with your wife and kids when you get home from a hard day at work, instead of having a drink or watching TV, you probably have long-term perspective. You realize that investing time in the health and happiness of your children and spouse is a very valuable, high-priority use of time.
If you're doing extra studying in the evening to impove your skills and make yourself more valuable, you're acting with a long-time perspective. Learning new practical skills that you can put to use now and in the future can have a positive effect on your long-term personal and career growth.
Setting priorities almost always translates to sacrificing present enjoyment for future enjoyment. It means trading in short-term pleasure in the for much greater and more substantial rewards in the future.
The "inability to delay gratification is what economists deem the principle cause for failure in life, on both an economic and a personal level. Having the willpower to do what you know is important for the long-term (although maybe difficult in the "here and now") is what leads to success in the various aspects of life.
