Great Bar Stool Reading: The Great American Novels Pt. 5

A list of the Great American Novels and good reading forbar stools that everyone should read if they consider themselves a true American

. Gravitys Rainbow One of the toughest Great American Novels, and the longest, Gravitys Rainbow is the elusive, dense, and mysterious opus from the strange and clandestine writer Thomas Pynchon. The book is a weaving, epic, postmodern tale that touches on so many different themes and characters that it is often hard to keep track of them all. At its core, Gravitys Rainbow is about the production of V-2 rockets by the German military and a mysterious device called the Schwarzgerat. It is not an easy read, and many have found it to be overwritten and obscene, making it one of the more controversial books in the canon of Great American Novels. Pynchon came out of hiding in 2006 to publish another epic novel entitled Against the Day which many readers have praised just as highly as Gravitys Rainbow. The Adventures of Augie March Saul Bellow is one of the lesser read authors in this list of Great American Novels and their creators. Bellows classic, The Adventures of Augie March is about the titular character growing up during the Great Depression in America. It follows March through trials and tribulations, all the while painting an indelible picture of American history, woes and triumphs, which is why it is considered essential reading for Americans and American history buffs. Bellows novel could be considered a longer, broader and more Jewish version of Huckleberry Finn or The Catcher in the Rye, spending more time on the study of Jews in American history. The Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgeralds crowning achievement, The Great Gatsby is the most obvious attempt at a writer intentionally trying to create a Great American Novel. Fitzgeralds story of the rise and fall of Nick Carraway as he makes friends and lovers in Long Island and New York is up there with the greatest stories and novels about the rich, Upper East Side and Northeastern United States. Carraway is a bit of a sod, a sort of antihero that the reader is meant to loathe and cheer on as he woos his way into the life of Gatsby and his hanger-ons. The ending to the novel is one of the most controversial and shocking in all of American literature, making The Great Gatsby essential reading for all Americans.
