. The Grapes of Wrath Another novel about Americas Great Depression, The Grapes of Wrath follows a family of sharecroppers and Okies who are driven from their home state by the drought and economic hardship in the hopes of finding a home in California. The novel is essential reading for high school students and history majors because of its relevance in detailing an important part of American history, and showing the struggles of so many families in the South during this time. A famous Hollywood picture was made of the novel with the blue-eyed Henry Fonda playing the patriarch and with legendary Western director John Ford in the directors chair. One of the most well known and respected Great Depression novels, The Grapes of Wrath is one of the best novels not only in America, but in the world. The Sound and the Fury William Faulkner often places in the top five of the greatest writers of all time, and for good reason. Faulkners difficult, elusive and episodic novel The Sound and the Fury is often considered his masterwork and one of the greatest American novels ever written. Marked by its distinct stream of consciousness writing style, the novel is set in Faulkners fictional Yoknapatawpha County which Faulkner wrote many of his stories around. The novel is centered around the Compson family, who are wealthy white aristocrats struggling to maintain their sanity and family closeness. The novel is broken up into four different sections, each focusing on a different member of the Compson family. It is Faulkners best work, but is best experienced after you have read some of Faulkners more accessible works.
