Great Bar Stool Reading: The Great American Novels Pt. 4

A list of the Great American Novels and goodbar stool reading that everyone should read if they consider themselves a true American

. The Catcher in the Rye You cant say you have lived until youve read J.D. Salingers The Catcher in the Rye. Often assigned reading in high school, the story follows antihero Holden Caulfield, an intelligent but listless teenager who finds his life at an important crossroads when he is expelled from his college prep school and runs off to New York City where he has a number of runs ins with different characters that only seem to reinforce his belief in the futility of life and the phony nature of human beings. It is only his younger sister and her innocence that keeps him alive and believing that there is some hope in this world. The novel has seen its fair share of controversy due to its vulgar language and sexual references and J.D. Salinger is still alive, living a reclusive lifestyle and only coming out of hiding to shoot down any attempts at directors to make The Catcher in the Rye into a film. On the Road The great Beat novel, Jack Kerouacs 1951 novel is largely autobiographical, and follows Sal Paradise as he hitch hikes across the United Sates and into Mexico, and the large cast of strange characters and friends he meets and travels with along the way. Sal picks up various jobs in his travels to earn money and is often under the influence of drugs. Many poets and musicians consider On the Road as their own personal Bible, as changing their lives and opening them up to an entirely different way of living life. Bob Dylan, Hunter S. Thompson and many others have all said to have been greatly influenced by Kerouac and On the Road. There has been a reported film adaptation in the works for many years now, with Gus Van Sant at one time poised to direct.
