Five Frequently Asked Questions About Australia

Five Frequently Asked Questions About Australia

Whether you're planning on a move to Australia or just want some information

to help you with the local pub quiz, check out these five frequently asked questions about the country Down Under.

1. Why do Brits get called Poms?

The answer to this is really straight forward but particularly interesting.

For Brits, we're called Poms due to Australian's using the rhyming slang pomegranate to describe immigrants, of which there was a distinct influx of during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, particularly from the UK. Whilst pomegranate may not sound like immigrant in an English accent, say it the Australian way - pommy-grant - and it instantly becomes obvious. Five Frequently Asked Questions About Australia

2. How many areas are there in Australia and can I move to any of them?

In Australia, there are a total of eight separate areas, which are broken up into six states (from west to east there's Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales) and two territories (the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory).

Whilst Australia immigration rules mean you can in theory move to any of them, you will generally want to avoid the vast majority of Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory, purely for the fact they are particularly dry and arid, unless you move to or near the major cities in each of them (Perth, Adelaide and Darwin respectively).

3. I'm a lover of sport and planning moving to Australia, what should I be expecting?

Simple - everything!

Australia is a particularly sporty nation (the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported in 2005 that approximately a quarter of everyone over 15 years old played some type of regular sport) and has dominated in recent years in both rugby league and rugby union, cricket and hockey, as well as being able to field strong athletes for a range of Olympic sports, including cycling and swimming.

And don't worry; Australians may not be as mad on football as Brits, but they like it a great deal more than in the US, meaning it has quite a large, dedicated following.

4. I know Australia is one of the biggest countries in the world, but how big actually is it?

Covering 2,941,299 square miles, Australia is the sixth largest country by area size in the world. However, what aspect of its size is more attractive is that it is one of the world's least densely populated countries, having approximately just 7 people in every square mile.

5. Are there really drop bears and yowies in Australia? Five Frequently Asked Questions About Australia

Two of the most infamous animals in Australia are the drop bears and yowies. The first, drop bears, are koala bears which hang from trees and when their unsuspecting victim walks underneath where they are hanging, they fall and attack them.

The second, yowies, are similar to that of the American Big Foot or Yeti and have been heard running through bushes, giving off a particularly pungent smell and screaming loudly.

Fortunately, both are completely fictional. Drop bears are nothing more than a made up tale to scare tourists (supposedly Americans when they first started looking into Australia immigration of some sort) and yowies, whilst they haven't officially been disregarded as a myth, have been proved to be hoaxes in some instances and on occasion, escaped mental health patients.
