Feds Recall More Kid Jewelry Due To Toxic Cadmium
Children are the most vulnerable segment of our society and it is our duty as parents and adults to protect them as much as possible
. Obvious hazards such as a hot stove, deep water or moving vehicles are easy to spot and help children avoid, but it is the unseen or unknown hazard that can cause harm. For the 4th time this year a recall has been put into effect for products that are meant for children because they contain high amounts of toxic heavy metals. This time the products were distributed through doctor and dentists offices, places where children are taken to be helped and are supposed to be safe. This is getting ridiculous!!Charm bracelets and rings that have given away free by doctors and dentists offices to children since 2005 have been found to contain high levels of the toxic heavy metal Cadmium. The company that imported the trinkets actually did the testing that lead to the recall. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says it is helping to coordinate the recall in conjunction with the distributor of the items, Smilemakers, Inc.
Cadmium is a known neurotoxin that affects the lungs, kidneys, bones and immune system. Since children are still developing they are far more susceptible to harm from these toxins even though they may build up over time. The problem at the moment is that there are no real federal laws or rules concerning the amount of Cadmium that can be in children's products. For decades the focus had been on Lead and Mercury in consumer products and foods. Several States and the Federal Government are moving to pass more restrictive laws concerning the content of Cadmium but it will take time to help remedy this situation.
ALL product where they are produced in the U.S. or imported NEED to be tested for toxic or harmful substances. It should be incumbent upon all manufacturers to make sure that their products are safe and to provide testing that proves this. Our government cannot keep track of every product or ingredient in each product.
