Dealing with night terrors in children

Night terrors are a type of sleep disorder that affect adults and children. They are more commonly found in children aged two to six. Children suffering from night terrors often wake up screaming or crying and in more severe cases may hallucinate.

Children suffering from night terrors will often go through a number of behavioural patterns. Some may wake up crying or screaming after a night terror whilst others may wander around the room or appear dazed. Some children will remember frightening images upon waking but may have no recollection of the night's events the following morning. Strange behaviour during the night could be a symptom of a night terror.

Children that have suffered a night terror may shake, sweat, experience extreme fear, confusion or irritability. Another sign of night terrors is a rapid heartbeat and an inability to awaken during the dream. Many children may need comforting after experiencing night terrors but in some cases, particularly with children experiencing extreme fear, they may be difficult to calm down.

Night terrors are usually not harmful to children but if they persist, then it could be a sign that a child is stressed. Noting regular themes that appear in a child's dream may enable parents to find out what may be stressing their child. Children may not be able to remember the dream fully but recognising what a child is afraid of once a dream has occurred may help to solve the problem.

If a parent has previously suffered from night terrors then it may be worth consulting a doctor, as the condition, along with many other sleep disorders, can be hereditary. Many children are often helped by receiving plenty of comfort from a parent after a night terror but if the problem persists then a doctor may suggest Benadryl, which can help to reduce night terrors.
