Eating Disorders Rise Among Teens
Eating disorders among teens has been rising for a few decades
. In a 7 seven year period, there has been an estimated 120 percent rise in eating disorders for children under the age of 12. Eating disorders in the past have generally been problematic with white teenage girls. There has been a rise in the eating disorders which affect people of a race and boys and lower income. The most alarming rise is among boys who represent roughly 5 to 10 percent of teens with eating disorders.Doctors are unsure why they are seeing such a dramatic increase in eating disorders. There are many factors that contribute to eating disorders among teens and adults. Media images of very thin women contribute but doctors are finding that there may be genetic influences to eating disorders, as well. The desire to be thin can be so strong in a person that they may risk their health to attain their ideal body. To the person with an eating disorder their body image can be seriously distorted; often they feel like they are fatter than they really are and obsessively diet and purge. Many people diet to reach their ideal physique but those with eating disorders take it to the extreme detrimental to their health. Maintaining a healthy relationship with their bodies can be hard for people with eating disorders.
