Changing Child Behavior - How To Tell If Your Kids Behavior Is Normal

An extremely relevant question that many first time parents may be asking is - What can be classified as normal behavior for a child?

The problem that is evident though, is normal behavior in children is usually determined by the child's age at a particular time, their personality, and the perceived rate of their physical and emotional development. Therefore, because children are constantly changing, they must be normal the majority of the time.

However, children's behavior may be seen as a problem ifa) it doesn't match the expectations of the family unit. orb) if it is in any way disruptive or unusual.

'Unusual' behavior, 'Normal' behavior, and "Good" behaviors are, 'more often than not' determined by whether they are socially acceptable, culturally correct, and developmentally appropriate. Therefore, knowing what to expect from your child at each age / stage of his or her development will greatly help you to decide whether his or her behavior is normal or otherwise.Changing Child Behavior - How To Tell If Your Kids Behavior Is Normal

Understanding a little about what you can do to change your child's behavior is a proactive step toward actually initiating a change.

For example, Children will tend to continue a particular behavior when or if it is rewarded, and they tend to cease some behaviors when they are ignored or overlooked. So a proactive parenting practice would be to reward good behavior and ignore bad behavior.

A very important thing that you must be diligent about is consistency because if you reward a behavior today and then ignore or punish your child for the same or predominantly similar behavior tomorrow, your child will just become confused.

A few choices for when your child's behavior is a problem, are:

Simply decide that the behavior is normal and/or appropriately suits the child's age and therefore it is not a problem.

Make an attempt to stop the behavior, by ignoring it completely or by deciding upon a suitable punishment. All the while making sure that the problem doesn't become a bigger problem.

Introduce your child to an alternative behavior that is a little more desirable and then reward your child when they use the new behavior.

Can misbehavior be stopped? If so, how can it be stopped?

It is possible to change any behavior and put a stop to undesirable behaviors like hitting, kicking, spitting, lying, shouting, and more... The list is endless. The best way to stop undesirable behaviors like temper tantrums is to simply just ignore your child. Ignoring temper tantrums is the best way to eliminate them. It does take time, though. Be patient!

Should you want a particular behavior to cease immediately, you may choose to just give your child a time-out. Sit them on a kitchen chair or a bottom stair for a few minutes. Sending a child outside for a time out is less effective, because as soon as they get outside, they will likely just find a toy or something to play with and will soon forget why they were sent outside in the first place.

There are many easy to implement but effective ways to managechild behavior problems that your child is experiencing. Trial and error is a very important part of parenting, but if you are still not able to manage your children's behavior, then you may need to seek some third party advice and / or HELP!
