Statistics indicate that about 40 million people are blind all over the world
. Especially in the developed countries, this number is growing everyday and there is very limited equipment to respond to this problem. Almost half the cases are caused by cataract and most of the rest is by conditions that can be easily avoided.Joining forces with its partners, the Child Vision Campaign aims at preventing blindness and restoring sight by providing support to the programs that are run locally in the under-served communities. The program lays emphasis on service, research and evaluation of means that are community based and that provide high quality eye-care and cataract operations. The program also works to make these services accessible and affordable to all the people of these communities.
The Child Vision Campaign was conceptualized based on the combined experience and visions of the partners with the motto of greatly reducing blindness in children and to encourage healthy vision. Almost 500,000 children become blind every year and a lot of these die in a span of one-two years of blindness. The reasons for them going blind are plenty. However, most of these can be prevented if proper care is taken. Simple eye glasses could have saved many children while some wouldnt go blind if they were detected and cured at an early stage. Some need hospital treatment. The many who cannot be cured require to be dealt with in rehabilitation centers and community education.
Taking full advantage of the expertise and experience of the partners of this program, the Child Vision Campaign is making remarkable progress. In order to understand the needs of the local population, developing service networks and solving problems pertaining to the eye, education, testing and rehabilitation facilities are being provided. Through the contacts with institutional clinics and world leaders, leverages will be made by the Child Vision Campaign to provide eye-care services in many other underdeveloped countries.
