Friendship is a wonderful thing. As is money. Like many other wonderful things, however, these two golden nuggets need to stay within certain boundaries, and should never be mixed.
Milk is another wonderful thing. It's refreshing, good for your bones and goes wonderfully with cookies or cake. Vinegar is similarly wonderful. Without it, salt and vinegar chips would just be plain. You can also use it in salad dressings or as a preservative. The thing is, when you combine milk and vinegar, you don't get double-wonderful. You get a goopy curdled mess that is sour and stinks to high-heaven.
Which brings us to the point?
Like vinegar and milk, friendship and money are mutually exclusive in their greatness. Friendships have ended in brutal and spectacular fashion over money, and fortunes have been squandered over poor financial judgment involving friends.
Toby Rahilly, the web developer who created an iPhone application called Billulater understands this, and could be the very man responsible for saving your friendship (or your fortune) in the future.
Billulater is an app that allows you to record the incomings and outgoings of a meal shared with friends, so that the extra $20 you put in or the additional three martinis that the unstable fringe-dweller in the group pounded back don't get lost in the melee and end up curdling relationships
Billulater makes it easy, intuitive and hassle-free to capture everything from a photograph of a bill to a breakdown of who owes what to whom. There are similar apps (including Share-a-bill' and Shared expenses'), but in terms of features, functionality and price, Billulater is in a league of its own.
Rahilly came up with Billulater after a particularly convoluted email discussion with work friends over how to split a bill: I had the idea when trying to resolve a lot of drink and food bills from different bars after a night out. After about 20 emails and discussions I thought, "There must be a better way".'
We often think of social media as a pre-cursor to physical interactions (i.e. you send out a Facebook invite which leads to the coming together of friends in person). This app proves that social media has become so convergent that it can actually even those face-to-face interactions smoother.
Billulater is a perfect example of this and of how smart phone technology is changing the way we approach well, everything.
