A Bonus Is What Managers Want For Christmas

Britain's managers have said that a financial bonus is on the top of their Christmas wish list.Research by the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) has discovered that 48 per cent of managers said that a monetary gift was their most desired employee benefit during the upcoming festive period.Penny de Valk, chief executive of the ILM, said that the due to the current economic climate, managers were most concerned with immediate financial security compared to long-term career progression.Ms de Valk went onto say that businesses should try to offer a financial reward to employees who have worked hard over the past year as this will boost their morale and make them feel more appreciated. She said: "Where possible, organisations looking to thank staff for their hard work can rest assured that some sort of seasonal bonus will be particularly well received this year."While most managers may be focused on their finances, they are also concerned about the performance of their business as some revealed unselfish requests that topped their wish list. The survey found that 16 per cent of managers wanted more training for their staff, while ten per cent wished for a promotion and 11 per cent desired a larger budget for 2011.Employers may be interested in performance improvement consulting services in the New Year as the research revealed that a significant number of managers have made a resolution to improve their work/life balance. The study discovered that 38 per cent of managers wanted a better balance between their work and life in 2011 compared to just 17 per cent who said that they wished to improve their management style next year.Ms De Valk said that the survey reaffirmed that a large number of employees are worried about their work/life balance as many have spent more time working during the recession for the same amount of pay."Working hours have been rising steadily for high numbers of people and the challenging economic backdrop means that increasingly workers have been getting into the office early and staying later," she said. Another festive factor affecting managers this month is the office Christmas party which is already striking fear into Britain's bosses due to the combination of colleagues and cocktails.Nearly half of managers told the ILM that they were afraid their team members would argue or become aggressive and almost three-quarters worried that their staff would consume too much alcohol.
