Malarone is an anti-malarial tablet; a combination drug containing the active ingredients Atovaquone and Proguanil. The tablet is known to be very effective in preventing P.Falciparum malaria with minimal side effects when taken as per doctor's advice in appropriate dosage. In many countries various known anti-malarial treatments have developed resistance, under such circumstances Malarone can come to rescue and can be used as an alternative treatment.
The tablet Malarone can be used both as prevention as well as treatment for malaria. The drug helps in starting the prevention treatment 1-2 days before entering a malaria infected region and for 7 days after leaving. The tablet is available in both adult as well as pediatric versions. The child dose is prescribed as per the body weight, is not licensed for use in children weighing 10kg or less. The drug has also developed resistance under certain malaria strains, however, it's found to be effective in most cases.
Malarone is a highly effective treatment, however, it is not free from certain side effects and patients may experience difficulty sleeping (nightmares, incoherent dreams) while taking this medication. Headaches and stomach irritation have also been reported, though this can be helped by taking the drug with food or a milky drink. The oral form of drug may not work effectively under circumstances where the patient is infected with severe malaria. At times, the doctor has to resort to injections or IV treatment.
Under no circumstances the tablet Malarone should be taken on own without the advice of the registered medical practitioner. The drug carries a number of possible side effects and also may not be useful at times as various strains of malaria have developed resistance against the drug. However, the drug is known to be very effective against a wide range of malaria strains; available in different forms (adult as well as pediatric).
