Will Allowing My Child To Get Liposuction Help Or Hurt Their Self Esteem?

Studies have shown that mothers who put a large emphasis on their outward appearance

have a strong affect on their daughters and whether or not the daughter develops an eating disorder later in life. Eating disorders are very dangerous things and while mothers simply want to look and feel their very best, developing habits of self-criticism and deprecation can eventually lead to those habits being passed on to their children. If having a scale in an easily accessible can lead to eating disorders in the home then obviously something that is a bigger deal like liposuction could have adverse affects as well.

The key to not allowing your decision to undergo liposuction is to evaluate your motives for doing so and then explaining them to your children. This way they can understand the true motive behind such a decision rather than assume other things and then developing serious body issues because of the inadequacy they might feel through your perceived influence of not being satisfied with your own body the way it is.

If your children feel that liposuction is a way to get a "new and improved" body with no work and if they feel that their own bodies are inadequate unless altered by cosmetic surgery, these could add up to the development of serious body issues later in life such as anorexia, bulimia and other self-destructive tendencies borne from having issues with one's body.

As you explore the option of liposuction, discuss with your children why you are considering this surgery. Explain that you are working hard to be healthy and happy but liposuction is a way to get rid of small spots of the body that need some help. Prior to and after the surgery, encourage your children to exercise with you. It is almost impossible to determine exactly what will be absorbed in your child's psyche enough to develop some serious issues later in life. Simply be open and honest with your child. Explain how you feel and how the focus is to be healthy and happy, not to alter one's body just because.
