Why does ‘Middle England' get hit hardest by taxes?

Why does Middle England' get hit hardest by taxes

?

If even the Tories are hitting the middle-classes with a tax hike, what's going on? I was told on TV the other day that the middle is a good place to be' but is it?

Firstly, the accuracy of this statement is, of course, flawed in many respects. This article, instead of evaluating it, will take it at face value and explore the concept of "Middle England" being hit hardest by tax changes.

According to Adam Smith, taxes should be designed in such a way that people are taxed based on their ability to pay them the concept of equality'. The inherent problem with this ideology is that it conflict with the other assumption of economics which is that people will always tend to act in their own best interest. Therefore, whilst in theory the richest members of society should be taxed the most, these rich members of society have the most access to ways of avoiding taxes: leaving the country, foreign bank accounts, etc. Therefore the next-best people to tax are the next-class-down: the middle-class. The poorest people in society should arguable have to pay no tax at all hence the Liberal Democrat policy to increase the threshold for tax breaks. The (relative) lack of tax revenue from the highest and lowest earners in the country mean the bill for middle-England' is higher than it would otherwise be. So, is this right?

Well in many ways, yes. The economy relies on the people at the top of the pile the entrepreneurs, the directors, the best business minds in the world. Without these people in the country the GDP would undoubtedly take a hit, and other countries would benefit from our experts. It is hard to disagree that the poorest people in society deserve welfare and a safety net from the state, even if you don't agree with how the system works at the moment. Therefore, the only place taxes can be reasonably targeted is "Middle England".

So is the middle a good place to be? Of course it is. The middle is where you have the opportunity, if you have the potential, to become one of these big earners' that is so cherished by the UK economy. The middle is where you don't have to rely on state benefit and support. The middle is where you've been given the necessary skills and tools by the state to start giving something back to train the next generation. The middle is where you're just as happy as everyone else who's living the life of Middle England.
