Why Is Your Child Bed Wetting?
Nocturnal enuresis or bed wetting is one of the more frequent issues parents bring to pediatricians
. Child bed wetting affects about 1 in 5 five year olds and as many as 1 in 20 ten year olds. In most cases this is a passing problem that will correct itself. Primary nocturnal enuresis that starts and continues from infancy is usually attributed to either a neurological developmental delay, or to a family history in which one or both parents wet their beds when five or older.While these are the most common causes of enuresis there are other causes, and 2-3% of cases may have a medical basis that should be evaluated by a doctor, so that appropriate strategies can be developed to address the underlying cause.
About 5% of bedwetting is caused by disease and infections, most notably urinary tract infections.
Some children actually have a smaller than normal bladder capacity which is unable to hold all the urine produced by their bodies. For many this is a situation that will correct itself over time.
Some wetting incidents are the result of constipation which adds pressure on the bladder leading to accidents.
The natural hormone ADH acts as an anti-diuretic and slows urine production at night. In some children the hormonal balance can be affected resulting in little or no ADH in their systems. The result is that their bodies produce more urine than their body's can contain.
Among the culprits are drinks containing caffeine that tens to stimulate urine production. Alcohol can have the same effects. This is the most obvious cause of the problem and should be easy to implement corrective action.
It appears that enuresis is 2.7 times higher with children with ADHD, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Child bed wetting is also a symptom of sleep apnea in children, where the child finds it difficult to breathe while sleeping. If your child also has frequent sore throats and appears drowsy during the day you will want to pay particular attention to this possibilty.
Some inconclusive studies suggest that some food allergies may also play a causal role in child bed wetting.
Psychological causes can affect not only child enuresis but also returning or secondary enuresis in older children and even adults. Traumatic events from accidents, bullying, sexual abuse, death in the family, are associated with bed wetting.
Stress in general from family issues, divorce, new baby, new home, or other significant changes in their normal routine can aggravate wetting. Stress created by punishment and shame associated with their accidents can also serve as a cause of bed wetting and result in a nasty cycle of continued failure to remain dry.
These are the primary known causes associated with child bed wetting. In some cases it will take a series of tests to determine the primary cause of the problem. Understanding the underlying causes is critical element in developing a sound strategy that will help your end your child's bed wetting.
