What is Second Child Syndrome?

What is Second Child Syndrome?

Have you ever noticed how your enthusiasm and excitement changed from the first and second you got pregnant? Have you ever wondered why you are less amazed to see your second child take his first step compared to seeing your first baby's first walk? If yes, then read along and understand what could be the effects of these behaviors to you and your second child.

According to a study of Alfred Adler, an Australian psychologist, a child according to birth order will have specific traits. The second child may have more prominent traits if

he is having the middle or second child syndrome. This is a psychological effect on the child being the second in the family. Your lack of enthusiasm and recognition to your second child's firsts may make him feel undeserving and not appreciated.

The difference of the children's ages is also another factor. It is difficult for a parent to attend a child who is already in preschool and at the same time taking care of the other who just started to walk. Because of the many activities, the attention you provide to your second offspring is divided. In some instances you might have to let the younger one to tag along to your older child's school activities. This may pose a negative effect on the child and to you as parent.

Since the second child is given less attention than the first one, he may also have less goals in life and doesn't dream big. He acts this way because it is also instilled in his mind that his efforts will simply go unnoticed.

Another trait of a child who has a second child syndrome is negative attitude. Your second child may talk to you in a sarcastic manner and you may also notice that he appears to be irritated most of the time. This is his defense against the feeling of lack of attention. You can bring these walls down by reaching out to your child and showing him a lot of love and affection.

To reconnect with your child once more, shower him with much love and affection. With persistence and patience, you will be able to overcome the barriers between you and your second child.
