Spartacus: Gods of the Arena is a television mini-series and a prequel to Spartacus: Blood and Sand which premiered on January 21, 2011. It chronicles the life of Gannicus, the second gladiator who will become the next champion of Capua. John Hannah stars as Batiatus, Peter Mensah as Oenomaus, Lucy Lawless as Lucretia, and Manu Bennett as Crixus.
The mini-series covers the bloody history of the House of Batiatus, and the legendary city of Capua before Spartacus arrived. Quintus Lentulus Batiatus becomes the lanista or manager after he takes over his father's ludus of gladiators. He has dreams of stepping out of his father's shadows by seeking fame and notoriety for his name and achieve greatness for his house. He has a beautiful wife Lucretia, who will lay everything on the line for her husband's glory. Batiatus puts all his efforts to his best warrior, the one who will bring him great fame and honor, his best gladiator, Gannicus.
