View Paris Through the Sacr-Coeur Basilica

The historic and architectural landmark, the Basilique Sacre-Coeur is a multi domed structure perched, quite fittingly, at the highest point of Paris. A well-known landmark in Paris, the Basilique is a Roman Catholic Church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The construction of this impressive structure began way back in 1875 and it was not until 1914 that the church was completed.

This nationalist and religious symbol was designed by Paul Abadia in a Neo-Romanesque and Neo-Byzantine architectural styles. It is also believed that the Basilica's multi-domed style was inspired by the St Front in Perigueux.

Depicting nationalism, this famous structure boasts a triple arched entrance which is gracefully surmounted by the two national saints, King Saint Louis IX and Joan of Arc, both equestrian statues made of bronze. Savoyarde, the great bell of the Basilica, also depicts the same theme as it refers to the annexation of Savoy to France in 1860.

The structure itself is made out of Chateau-Landon stone, a high quality off-white local stone. This frost-resistant granite naturally bleached with time, affords the Basilica its glowing white exterior.

One of the key interior attractions of the Basilica is its 'Golden Mosaics', clearly visible at the apse. Designed in 1922 by Luc-Oliver Merson, it is one of the largest apse mosaics in the world. The other interior attraction actually involves the exterior: spiralling stairs which leads up the Basilica's hemispherical roof affording panoramic views of Paris on a clear day a view almost as far as 30 kilometres.
