Plan out your route smartly: If you are going to a foreign land to travel home study about the place on internet. You would certainly cover several places while travelling to a foreign land. Study about their geographical positions and plan out your route wisely to cover as much places as possible in the least possible distance. You might choose a longer distance if the view is scenic. This will save your time, efforts and money while making your trip a smart trip.
2. Learn Language: If you are going to a place where majority of people speak a different language, it would be good to have elementary knowledge about that language. You must know about basic terms and phrases such as money, Thank you, what is your name, where is the washroom, etc. This makes your travel easy and helps you in bargaining with the shopkeepers while you shop. So its better to go for a language training course before taking off for your trip. Also, dont forget to carry a language translation booklet with you.
3. Be your own guide: I would personally advice you to not to hire a guide. They actually siphon the money off your pocket and make a fool out of you, that too politely. After all, they are trained for that. I dont intend to defame the job of a tourist, but from my personal experiences I have understood that many of them charge unreasonably. Why dont you be your own guide? IT has empowered you with great technologies and gadgets. Make use of them and extend your brain. Use internet enabled tablets and other similar gadgets to know about a place, sculptures, monuments, etc. Humble people are omnipresent. If you are very curious to know about something ask a humble person about the same. Why do you really need a man to guide you?
4. Pack smartly: Packing is a very important aspect of travelling. You must pack up the stuff to carry, wisely. Split you valuables in different bags and pockets so that if something goes missing or stolen, you are left with other valuables. Also keep the stuff above others in a bag, which you would use more often. So that you dont need to dig your entire bag to get what you want.
