The Three Stages Of Childbirth

The Three Stages Of Childbirth

There are three stages that occur during childbirth

. Before the three stages of the childbirth occurs a woman goes through a latent phase. This phase can last for several days. The end of this is marked when the cervix dilates. If the cervix is long that means that not much is in the lower segment and if it is short the opposite is true.

When the cervix has dilated to 3 centimeters the first stage of labor has begun. It is not uncommon for a woman to have contractions before reaching this amount of dilation. When the cervix is dilating progressively then a woman is said to be in labor. Sometimes slight bleeding occurs to mark the beginning of labor.

At this point contractions begin to occur and the upper uterus shortens while the lower part of the uterus is pulled upwards. This continues until the cervix is fully dilated or about the size of a full term baby's head.

The first phase of labor normally lasts about 8 hours for first time mom's and about half that time for a woman who has already been through childbirth.

Now that the cervix has fully dilated the second stage of childbirth has begun. This stage lasts until the child is actually born. During the beginning of the stage the baby's head should be fully engaged in the pelvis. It's head would have already passed the interspinous diameter. This is the most narrow area of the pelvis. The woman will likely feel a series of burn's or sting's during this phase. The end of this stage is marked when the baby is born.

The third and final stage of childbirth is the delivery of the placenta (afterbirth). This normally occurs about fifteen to thirty minutes after the baby is born. Through the entire childbirth the amount of blood loss is relatively low. The uterus contracts right after the baby comes out to help stem the flow of the blood. Blood loss for a typical childbirth is around 600 ml.

There are several ways of going about the third stage. Either the doctors can stand back and allow the placenta to be birthed naturally or they can help speed up the process. In order to speed the delivery of the placenta the mother must breastfeed or the top of the uterus needs to be massaged. For best results, both of these should be done in concord with each other. According to a study the best way to avoid postpartum blood loss is to have the doctors try to speed up the delivery of the placenta.
