The Switch - Movie Review

"The Switch" is a romantic comedy film that was released in 2010. It is rated PG-13.

The main character Kassie Larson (Jennifer Anniston) has gotten tired of dating all of the wrong guys and her biological clock is ticking loudly. Like the character in "The Backup-Plan" she decides that she really wants a baby and cannot wait around any longer to get married. However, she decides to choose her own donor and do the procedure right there in her own home.

Her best friend Wally (Jason Bateman) is a securities analyst, apparently makes good money, but is very neurotic and is somewhat quirky. Personally, the way he moans when he eats would freak me out if I saw it in a restaurant. He is also pessimistic and has low self confidence. He has loved Kassie for a long time but has never gotten up the nerve to tell her. When she tells him of her decision to be artificially inseminated using the sperm of a handsome stranger named Roland they argue and do not see each other for a while. Then he receives an invitation in the mail from Kassie's roommate (Debbie, played by Juliet Lewis) for Kassie's "insemination party" to be held in their apartment while Kassie artificially inseminates herself in the bathroom.

When he gets there he starts drinking heavily and Debbie gives him some herbs that seem to magnify the effects of the alcohol. He ends up in the bathroom where Kassie is going to perform the procedure. There he notices a cup containing Roland's semen. In a move that would make most men uneasy, he picks up the cup and takes off the lid. When someone knocks loudly at the door he is startled and spills the semen into the sink. Not knowing what else to do, he decides to replace the semen with his own. He does so, and leaves. When he wakes up the next day he doesn't remember anything of the evening before and is unaware that he is going to be a father.

Fast forward and Kassie decides to leave New York City to go back home to the Midwest, a safer place to raise her child. They stay in touch and around 7 years later Kassie decides to move back to New York with her son Sebastian. When Wally meets Kassie and Sebastian in a restaurant on her return, he notices that the boy also moans while eating. The kid is neurotic, a hypochondriac, and worries about everything. The boy and Wally are much alike and over time they eventually start to bond.

Roland, meanwhile has gotten divorced and welcomes Kassie's invitation to meet and discuss Sebastian. They get along well and start dating. He is a gung-ho kind of guy and he and Sebastian do not relate to each other. During this time Wally starts to think that he might be Sebastian's father. He has a conversation with his friend (Jeff Goldblum) who tells him that he said some things that night while drunk that confirm his suspicions. On the day that Roland plans to propose to Kassie, Wally gets up the courage to tell her what he had done and that he loves her. She slaps him, kicks him out, and tells him to leave them alone.

Of course, after another depressing period of missing her and Sebastian, she comes around and meets him at his building after work. She had realized that she loved him all along and that he would be a good father.

My Recommendation

I have to admit that I expected much better from this film. I like both Jennifer Anniston and Jason Bateman and had hoped that they would be great together but I would be lying if I said that this was the case. They werer okay but their chemistry together was negligible, like mixing spring water with distilled water, not much reaction.

The story itself was pretty predictable for both my wife and me. She thought that it was fairly depressing right up until the end when Kassie and Wally finally got together. I didn't really think it was depressing but I could understand her position. This kid finally meets and bonds his father, but didn't know that its his father. He gets pushed into a relationship with Roland whom he doesn't really like. Finally, he finds out that the man he admires and wants to be proud of him is his biological father. But he finds tis out at the same moment that his mother sends Wally away for what seems to be forever.

Anyway, I can recommend that you watch the film, just try to save the money and see it on DVD or wait for cable.
