This vaginal acidity weakens the sperms containing the 'Y' chromosomes, thereby making more 'X' chromosomes available for fertilization. He also states that having an orgasm during sexual intercourse should be avoided as the orgasm can make the vaginal atmosphere more alkaline which will be unfavorable for the sperms containing the 'X' chromosomes.

The Whelan Method

As a method of gender selection, the Whelan method is less popular as compared to the Shettle's method, but is known to yield a few positive results. This method was developed by Dr. Elizabeth Whelan and contradicts the Shettle's method. The Whelan method largely relies on the Basal Body Temperature (BBT) to determine the time of ovulation and states that intercourse should be planned very close to the time of ovulation.

The O+12 Method

This is the least popular method of gender selection and not many people know of it. This was developed by an Australian woman, who after giving birth to six boys, was desperate for a girl. Contrary to the Shettle's method, this method advises that couples trying to conceive a girl should have sexual intercourse 12 hours after ovulation.

Diet and Dietary Supplements

It is believed that the intake of certain dietary supplements, certain foods and some over-the-counter medications can help couples trying to conceive a girl. Having calcium and magnesium dietary supplements while trying to conceive a girl and having foods like Parmesan cheese, cucumbers, yogurt, cranberries, strawberries and raspberries, increase the chances of conceiving a girl. This, also known as the 'girl diet', creates an acidic environment in the vaginal area which makes it unfavorable for the 'Y' chromosomes to survive.

Myths And Legends

There are a number of legends surrounding the conception of a girl. These are surely funny, but no one really knows how far they are true. The most popular one is the use of the Chinese Conception Chart which uses the mother's age while conceiving with the month of the baby's conception to predict whether a boy or a girl would be conceived. Another legend states that having sexual intercourse in the afternoon or an intercourse initiated by the woman will help while trying to conceive baby girl. Some also state that if the woman has orgasm first or the couple make love during a full moon, it will help in conceiving a baby girl.
