Newly Adopted Baby? Five Picture Taking Keys
Newly Adopted Baby? Five Picture Taking Keys
Before you're notified by your adoption agency that you are about to be a newly adoption parent, start planning your picture history. While most people just point and click, you'll want to make sure that your pictures of your child or perhaps your international adoption trip turn out well and can be enjoyed forever. Here are five tips to remember when planning your adoption pictures.
Camera. Purchasing the right camera for you can be one of the biggest helps. You'll want something you can easily carry around, especially if you're doing any international adoption travel. Your adoption agency might have some tips for pictures, too, so ask. But you also want a camera that will have the greatest amount of clarity or grain (pixels) in the final product. If you are participating in an international adoption, be sure you have a means of uploading pictures, saving them to a memory stick or card and recharging the battery on your camera.
Background: Remember the most important focus of your picture is your new adoption baby, not the cat, the fireplace or the curtain. Make sure you gather in the background, but ensure your child's face and body is in focus. You'll want to include pictures of your adoption agency personnel and counselors, your lawyer, international adoption personnel and perhaps the foster mother, the birth mother or the nurses at the hospital.
Lighting. A good camera has an automatic light meter that tells it when there is not enough light and when there is plenty of light. If your camera says it needs the flash, an important rule of thumb is that the flash will only work in a six foot radius, not to light up your adopted baby and your international city scene more than six feet away or in a completely dark area. Unless you plan to buy some very expensive lighting equipment, which wouldn't be advisable, even a camera flash won't give you good color or lighting in a completely dark room or outside.
Move in close. Ask yourself what is the most important focus of the picture: The international adoption group, your whole family, grandparents holding the child, your adoption agency helpers, the dog and the child or just the child. Once you have your focus, move in a step or two and see if you can continue to see the whole group. It's easy to be far away from the focus in your picture, but you want to ensure that each member's face and your newly adopted baby's face are sharp and can be enlarged without going blurry. If you have a variety of lenses, you can stand further away, but changing lenses can become a problem when you need a quick international adoption agency group picture.
Take a variety. You'll want to get a variety of camera shots and backgrounds so your pictures are interesting and tell a story. Remember you are creating the historical story of your local or international adoption. You improve your story by adding backgrounds that are recognizable and tell your story. By planning ahead to take pictures of your adoption agency personnel, counselors, lawyers, court, and special days, you can ensure your baby's first adoption remembrance book is full of fun, ideas, and enjoyable to look at and read.
Hopefully these tips on how to take the best pictures on your international adoption trip, with your adoption agency or after you get your adopted child home will encourage you to take picture after historical picture.
