Super Review

The home of B movies, Troma Entertainment, gave James Gunn his first start in the movie business. He followed that up with his debut full feature Slither in 2006, a marriage of his two main loves, gore and comedy. His latest effort is Super, which builds from a rather comedic start about a self made vigilante who has no powers, but the overwhelming urge to be a crime buster. It progresses through the story until it becomes a very bloody and intense study of a man on a quest.

The progression of the movie makes you think of the fabulous Simon Pegg vehicle Shaun of the Dead. That too starts off as a comedy, then steadily becomes a violent and suspenseful zombie film. Star of 'the Office, Rainn Wilson, plays it perfectly straight as the frustrated short order cook, whose wife Sarah is a former junkie who's started using again. She quickly falls into the creepy and very skinny arms of an amusing but evil drug dealer Jacques.

This is more than a cook can take, and Frank reinvents himself as a powerless super hero. He is ably assisted in this transformation into the Crimson Bolt by a hand of God and the All Jesus TV network. He puts together a red costume, dons a mask and carries his lethal weapon, a Wrench. This is used with great effect to bash people over the head with.

The geeky and cheeky comedy comes from Frank's awkward attacks on the bad guys. He is very earnest and sweet about the whole thing, but ploughs in fearlessly. Wilson finds comedy in the sadness of his character, and you really feel for the guy. He reminds you of Travis Bickle, and is every bit as pathetic.

All three mains, including Liv Tyler as Sarah and Kevin Bacon as Jacques put in excellent performances, but the show pretty much stolen by Ellen Page. She plays the clerk of a comic book store who works out that Frank is he Crimson Bolt, and insists on being his not so trusty sidekick. After a hilarious sequence where she goes through various names for herself, she settles on Boltie.

It's an absolute joy to see the young star of Juno in such a role. She's giddy, goofy and an absolute delight. It's impossible to not be entrance by this little cutie, especially when she's reveling in the carnage and chaos she has created. She isn't cool, she hasn't got the answers to the questions she asks herself, and takes us on a great journey and she plunges from one disaster to another.

Gunn gets in on the fun as the Devil alongside the very subversive Holy Avenger, the mascot superhero of a Christian TV show. The Holy avenger is delightfully played by the unrecognizable star of Slither Nathan Fillion. Super is a great low budget film, it doesn't try to hard to be what it isn't, and the result is brilliant. Go and see it, or risk the wrath of the Crimson Bolt.
