Red Riding Hood Review

Padding out a very short fairy story to fill 90 minutes is no mean feat, but Catherine Hardwicke has given it a go. The new movie Red Riding Hood takes the classic, but brief tale, of the little girl in the red coat and gives it the Hollywood treatment. This kind of project is always risky, especially when this much filling is needed.

The result is kind of inevitable, the story is stretched to the extreme and then some more. It's easy to blame the Director at times like this, but in all fairness it's hard to see how anyone would have pulled this off with complete success. The movie has an uneasy feeling to it, bordering on paranoia. Why are they looking at me? Did you have a happy childhood? Not the type of psycho babble you expect in this kind of movie.

You also get the feeling that the writers of the screenplay have been incredibly lazy. The story of little Red Riding Hood is so well known that the public would have accepted embellishments to the story. If they had been in the right context that is. Hollywood has taken hundreds of books and, with a bit of artistic license, has played around with them to make it watchable.

There's nothing wrong with dragging a fairy tale kicking and screaming into the 21st century. It must retain, however, the charm and magic that made it a fairy tale in the first place. Additions to the story should be in the same context, not to the extent you are looking for shreds of the original story amongst all the post-modern guff.

This movie has a great cast, but rather misplaced. The great Gary Oldman voices a cleric who rolls into town on a tank like machine surrounded by bodyguards. Perhaps having never realized that Red Riding Hood was set not in Iraq. It is scenes like these that make this film very difficult to watch, as you are constantly asking yourself why?

The best bits of the movie are the bits that stick to the story. Unfortunately, that is a very small amount of time caught up in 90 minutes of confusion and mayhem. This isn't the first time this story has been brought to the big screen, and they have never had much success. How ever much they try, the over stretching will get them every time.

Halfway through it hits you how familiar it all seems, but in the wrong way. Then you remember what Catherine Hardwicke is most famous for. Yep, this is Twilight with a hood. Every male character looks like he has stepped straight off a calendar and you are expecting Edward Cullen to turn up any moment.

The most famous lines do make an appearance, but are so late on that they raise a chuckle amongst the audience. They seem lost in the irony of it all. At the end of the day this movie will make money, but for all the wrong reasons.
