1. To become a patent lawyer, you first have to complete your undergraduate program. To get assistance in your future law studies, you can take a major with a technical learning. 5. On completion of your law school, you will get your Juris Doctor degree. After that, you have to take the bar exam in your state. Bar exam is relatively tough and focused on your knowledge about federal and state law.
6. To start your career as a patent lawyer, you need to pass another exam called the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) registration exam. This exam focuses on your knowledge about patent law and USPTO policies and procedures. Once you will pass both bar exam and USPTO exam, you will start your career as patent lawyer.
7. There are patent agents as well, who can apply for patents. They are normally engineers or scientists who can file a patent. However, they cannot provide legal advice or represent clients before the USPTO or in court.
8. Those who have passed the USPTO registration exam, but don't pass the bar exam can still work as patent agent.
