Some Trivia Every Child Should Know About The Origins Of The Sash Window
Any average American who opens a window by grasping the frame or a small handle and pushing it upward is dealing with a sash window
. Children know all about sash windows even if they don't know the name. In all likelihood the average child in America or even in England would know little about the origins of the sash window.Most children are unaware of any connection at all between sashes and windows until they hear the famous poem that may or may not have been written by Clement Clarke Moore. It might have been written by Henry Livingston Jr. Most people don't care about the name of the author as much as they care about the names of the reindeer.
What The Night Before Christmas has to do with windows is the part where the narrator says, "Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash". To a child with a vivid imagination and little knowledge of the structure of windows it's easy to visualize this strange man leaping out of bed and vomiting up the belt to his bathrobe. Fortunately the story moves along rapidly and leaves little time for the child to ponder why the man would have eaten his sash and under what circumstances.
A kind and considerate adult will take time to explain what a window sash is and how it differs from a sash worn around the waist. This good person will explain that a window sash is like a frame that goes around the glass pane and fits into the actual window frame and slides up and down.
A bright child is likely to be so fascinated by this information that he or she will begin delving into history and learn about Robert Hooke who is credited with inventing the sash window in the 17th Century. He might have, although some people say he only got credit for it because Sir Isaac Newton was getting credit for all the really exciting discoveries and inventions. No one patented the invention and Newton and Hooke were probably much more interested in who got credit for gravity and things like that.
Window that slide up and down had probably been in use since the 1300s but they were kind of primitive. Since glass wasn't in use in windows at that time the window consisted of a wood panel that could be slid up and down. It let in air and light and rain and pests when it was open. It kept all those thing out when it was closed.
What came together in the mid 1600s was the glass window pane, the sash that moved vertically and the system of pulleys and weights to counterbalance the weight of the pane and sash. One of the earliest examples was installed at Ham House at Richmond up on Thames in 1670. Ham House is a fabulous example of 17th Century architecture and visitors there can learn a about art and history as well as the origins of the sash window.
