Sex and the City 2 Movie Review
Sex and the City 2is the second movie of the series that is ranked among the top 10 movies
. It is the sequel to the 2008 release Sex and the City, the first film of this romantic comedy series directed by Michael Patrick King. The original TV Series was conceived and written by Darren Star, writer of the top rated movies. This sequel is set two years later to the first film and opens with a gay wedding where the four friends have been invited.
Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Big (Chris Noth) are going through a rough patch in their married life, but is nothing unusual for married couples. Carrie likes to go out, whereas Big prefers to spend his time watching old movies on TV. Charlotte (Kristen Davis) finds her life a roller coaster with her two kids who are more troublesome than she would like them to be. The charming and lovely Samantha (played by Kim Cattrall) still defies the altar and continues her journey singularly, just as portrayed in the top movies.
The real plot of Part 2 begins with Samantha getting invited to Abu Dhabi by a wealthy Sheikh. She has to put up a public relations campaign for his vast business empire. Inseparable as they are, they embark upon this sponsored Arab sojourn in unity. But can trouble be far behind? First Carrie has a chance meeting with her ex-beau Aidan i.e. John Corbett, a star of many top 10 movies. Old memories kindle up and a tiny spark does not last for long.
The real problem with the foursome is their over zealous feminism and this starts getting into conflict with the puritan feminism of the Arab world. Sparks fly and liberal American views are spoofed at, ultimately leading to their branding as Anti-Muslim. King has successfully exploited this situation to his advantage, when in an Abu Dhabi night club the foursome take upon themselves to give a karaoke performance of Helen Reddy's I am Woman', a song fit for the top 10 movies. The situation becomes hopeless for them with all the men pouncing on them and the foursome getting rescued by muslim women who give their black robes to them to get them out of the club. Underneath their black robes the muslim women are wearing western outfits, just as is often depicted in the top rated movies.
King has many a weak link in his script. Carrie has been given more footage, what with her minor marital problems getting highlighted. Whereas the real life like dilemmas of Miranda and Charlotte are down played. Carrie does need sympathy on one count though-her not being able to choose between Noth and Corbett, both are so lovable on screen. Amusing cameos by Penelope Cruz and Liza Minnelli are a treat to watch.
Technically the film is superb. King has been fortunate to have a fabulous star cast and an excellent crew on board.
Maybe the male chauvinist shall try to rip it to pieces but King has a masterpiece. No matter what the viewers think and say, SATC 2 is here to stay.
