Risk Factors Of Breast Cancer

The second deadly disease in women is breast cancer

. Over 200,000 women are diagnosed each year in the U.S. Scientists have not discovered why women get breast cancer. However, there are risk factors for breast cancer that has been identified.

One of the risk factors that a woman should be aware of is if there is a history of breast cancer in her family. If one of her close relatives had breast cancer, she would make sure her physician is aware of the history. In some cases, the physician might recommend that she take a gene test to identify whether or not she might be a carrier for the disease.

The gene tests are called BRCA-1 and BRCA-2. The test will determine if the woman is a carrier for breast cancer. If the test is positive, she and her doctor can make be proactive in preventing her from getting breast cancer.

Another risk factor is if the woman has been diagnosed with breast cancer in the past. Once a woman has breast cancer, there is always a risk of recurrence. Recurrence can come back in the same breast, opposite breast, or may spread to lymph nodes or other parts of the body. It is very important that the woman attend her annual check ups.

Abnormal cells in the breasts can be one of the risk factors. One of the diseases called atypical hyperplasia can turn into cancer cells. If a woman finds lumps in her breasts, it is best to see her physician and have the lumps determine whether or not it is breast disease, cyst, or malignant tumors.

Women who are considered over weight are another risk factor. Studies have showed an increase of over weight women being diagnosed with breast cancer. Therefore, it is important for women to eat a healthy diet and exercise at least three to four times a week to avoid diabetes, increase in cholesterol, and maintain a balance blood pressure.

Other risks may include delay in child birth, early menstrual cycle, delay in menopause, women on birth control for long period of time, race, or women taking hormone therapy. If a woman feels she might be a high risk for breast cancer, it is best she speak to her physician. If a woman has a history of breast cancer in her family, she and her doctor should determine an age to start getting tested for breast cancer.
