Pre-Holiday Eating The Do's and Don'ts

Ready or not, the Holiday's are here! It's once again that time of year the shopping, the parties, the endless hours of eating and drinking And then the many morning-afters where thoughts of "Why did I eat/drink sooo much I'm never doing that again" continuously crosses our mindsuntil the next week when it all seems to be dj vu.

Even if healthy eating is one of our main priorities the majority of the year, it seems to always get thrown out the window right around Thanksgiving time, along with our commitments to exercise, drinking in moderation, and going to sleep at a reasonable hour. What often makes it even worse is us thinking that starving ourselves before we go out will help our cause, when in all actuality it often leads us to over-indulging even more!

The thought of consuming fewer calories now to save room for those extra (that we are inevitably going to take in later), does make sense when first considered. However, it never ends up that way. The fact that you haven't eaten all day and are now surrounded by mountains of decadent desserts and savory dishes leads to eating twice (if not three times) as much as you would have had otherwise. It makes eating in moderation impossible!Pre-Holiday Eating – The Do's and Don'ts

So what's the secret to staying on track this season and not letting the Holiday's ruin the "better you" that you've been working on for the first 10 months of the year? It's actually quite simple eat. Eat before you go out that is. Having a light meal before you go out will most certainly stop you from going overboard. Even eating something as small as an apple will help you cut-back on your calorie intake (at least somewhat).

While everything is fine in moderation, going to a party when you are so hungry you could gnaw your arm off, isn't going to make that plan feasible. Moreover, not eating and essentially "starving" yourself for extended periods of time actually slows down your metabolism and makes all those extra treats that you indulged in stick to your thighs all the more.

Being healthy this holiday season isn't impossible and shouldn't add any additional stress on you we have enough added stress from the Holiday's already! Just remember, the key is in the pre-planning: listen to your body's signals and eat when you are hungry (and stop when you are full!). The rest should be as easy as pie.

Stay tuned for more healthy Holiday hints and tidbits in the weeks to come.
