Exploring Six Ways To Travel Around London

Planning a trip to London and wondering how you can travel around the capital city of England

? Take a look through these six options, all of which are used regularly by residents and tourists alike each and every day.

1. Car hire London - if you're considering hiring a car when you're in London and you've mentioned this to someone who has been to the city before, it's highly likely that they've advised you against it, saying that to drive London, you have to be either mad or extremely brave.

The truth is that whilst car hire London can mean you're driving in one of the busiest cities in the world and with the vast amount of one way systems, cars, buses and cyclists you have to have your wits about you at all times, as long as you pay attention to the signs and road markings, there really is no reason why you should have any problem with car hire London.

The only problem with driving in London is that parking can seem almost non-existent and if you're driving through the city itself, you may enter the congestion zone, where you are required to pay a fee to be able to drive through that specific area.Exploring Six Ways To Travel Around London

2. London Underground - the oldest and one of the most widely used underground rail system in the world, the London Underground (or the Tube as it is more commonly known) transports millions of people all around the city each day.

Developed almost continually since its introduction in 1863, the Tube is fantastic for the fact it allows transport from one side of London to the other, without the congestion of the roads.

3. Buses - the red Routemaster buses of London are iconic and have become synonymous with the city and although they do make for a great photograph, they are actually a really great way to get around.

Cheap and reliable, if you have bought an Oyster card which entitles you to discounted travel on the Tube (you top it up as you go and receive discounted fares), you can also use it on most buses, too.

4. Bicycles - once something that would mean you would have had to bring a bicycle with you into the city, a scheme has been implemented in recent months that allows for people to hire a bicycle from one part of London, use it for as long as they require and then take it back to another part of London once they've finished.

5. Taxis - although using taxis is one of the more expensive ways of travelling around London, there's no doubt that if you need to get somewhere fast, a taxi is easily your best option.

All London taxi drivers have to pass a test before they receive their license, which involves, to all intents and purposes, the complete mental devouring, understand and remembering of a London city map.

6. Walking - due to the fact London has so many different attractions and there's such a lot to see and do, it can seem like it's a massive place and transport is a necessity.

However, London is actually a relatively compact city and with enough planning and preparation, it is possible to walk between most of the major attractions and at worst you may have to get one bit of public transport, but even that's only if you're not a particular fan of walking.
