Plan Ahead To Keep Children Entertained While Camping
Going camping as a family can leave your children with memories that will last forever
. But keeping your kids entertained long enough to make those memories is a different story. While you are getting ready for a camping trip, think of the different things you want to do with your kids and plan ahead. Your resources may be limited once you arrive at your camping destination, so planning ahead will help it so you don't have to hear those dreaded words: "I'm bored."There are a number of "standard camping activities" that are fun for children of all ages and require little additional gear.
First is making s'mores. You'll need a campfire, marshmallows, gram crackers and chocolate. You will also need something to roast the marshmallows with. You can use sticks you find on site or purchase roasting sticks from a store. A fun variation of this classic treat is to bring different type of chocolate like peanut butter cups, white chocolate, chocolate with nuts or caramel and others. You can also bring other treats to roast over the fire. Get creative, think outside the box and let your kids help you pick out additional treats from the candy aisle.
Another fun activity is stargazing. While camping, if you are far enough away from city lights, you will be able to see stars and constellations that you weren't able to in a city. It can be fun to bring a star book or information that will help you find and identify different constellations. Some books are even glow-in-the-dark so you don't have to keep a light on and can fully enjoy the beauty of the night sky.
Making shadow puppets is a fun activity that requires almost no additional gear. You'll just need a flashlight, the dark of night, your hands and a wall of your tent or RV. Encourage your children to be creative. Make up stories or play games trying to guess what the other person's shadow is. You can take the puppets to the next level and make your own puppets with Popsicle sticks or other crafts.
Taking your children on a scavenger hunt can be a fun and simple way to pass the time. Create lists of things you might find in your campsite and see who can find the most. You'll just need to bring something for the kids to collect their treasures in as they find them. You can have them find different types of plants, bugs, food and other things. You also can have them go on a photo scavenger hunt. Bring a digital or disposable camera for each child or team and take pictures of different things you might find in your camping area. Find different types of animals, different activities (like climbing a tree), cloud formations and other things.
Be creative and plan ahead and the memories you make with your children will be something you both can cherish for a lifetime.
