Ping K15 driver Review

The Ping K15 driver features patent pending Straight Flight Technology that uses an extreme external weight pad to move 10% of the club head mass towards the heel. By repositioning the centre of gravity this provides a natural rotation through impact. The design of the K15 driver means that the external sole weight pad is largely concealed.

The K15 has a larger 460cc head design that moves weight away from the clubface to push the centre of gravity backwards and provide a higher trajectory. By increasing the length from heel to toe Ping K15 has a larger surface to provide high levels of forgiveness and higher ball velocity.

It's a bigger profile than the G15. It looks bigger at address than the FT-IZ to me. Really inspires confidence. It is much more classical shape than the FT-IZ or Burner. I would call it "D" shaped. It is very long from front to back. And it is longer than the FT-IZ (that's long).

I had reservations about the stock TFC 149D shaft. This one is not offered with the Serrano as a no charge option. The shaft is very solid. Definitely plays to flex. Not even close to "whippy". I was surprised. By the way, I'm swinging around 104 mph right now. I like this shaft better than the Serrano. It doesn't keep the ball down as much, but it's more forgiving and does not seem to add too much spin.

Ping drivers are known to promote faster ball speed across the clubface. To that end, the K15 boasts a large face profile and high moment of inertia (MOI). K15's bread and butter, though, is to help guys rotate the clubface to a more square impact position and, subsequently, hit straighter shots. The head tries to "square up" dynamically (as you swing) due in part to a meaty, heel-side external pad along the sole.

When Ping's club designers and engineers, including Vice President John K. Solheim, decided to make a new super game-improvement driver, they saw that most of the clubs already on the market have closed faces. That made sense because many golfers in the market for super game-improvement drivers are slicers.

Though they did avoid the usual cliches of slice correction such as abundant use of offset, a 2-5* closed face, and other such ideas, their solution is simply a new twist on an old concept. Still, it shows all the earmarks of a Ping Creation in the sense that the craftsmanship and execution of the concepts involved is top shelf. Basically, this "SF" Technology as they call it, concentrates 10% of the club head's overall weight in the left heel area. This is achieved via an external weight pad. (That's the old) Even so, the club lines up square, and that, in and of itself are new. It's nice for slicers to be able to line up square, and hit a straight shot. That's where the SF (Straight Flight) Technology gets its name from. Some people will see extraordinary distance gains, but that will more than likely be the disappearance of their 25 yard slice rather than any real gain in club head speed or power.

As with the old sales pitch with cavity back irons, the Ultra Thin Crown Technology repositions weight low and back for increased MOI and a lower center of gravity." Admittedly that has been the buy line for just about every Game Improvement, and Super Game Improvement club to come marching off the assembly line over the past 20 years. Basically that's because repositioning 20+ Grams of weight on a single club can truly offer a lot of forgiveness, and thus that same sales pitch continues new club after new club, after new club. On this club, though, it also allows them to stretch the heel and toe so that this club sports an extremely wide face. I'm glad that Ping is being honest about all this rather than claiming "an enlarged sweet spot." Ping has indeed expanded The Safe Hitting Zone, and for once they don't try and B.S. us into believing it's "an enlarged sweet spot." Basically, if you strike the ball even remotely near the center of the face on this club--it's going to be a good shot.

This club is a winner. It is Pure and simple. Want to beat the ball? Want to hit straighter drives? Want to actually work the ball a bit? This may be your next driver then. The Ping K15 should be on anyone's short list to replace their current driver. The K15 surprised me so much and impressed me that much more that I'm going to do some serious pondering about head to head testing with my current driver which may entail a change at the top of my bag for 2011.
